McDowell held off a hard-charging Donald McIntosh late in the race to score his first-career Iron-Man Championship Series victory, earning $5,000 in the process.
“That race was a lot of fun,” McDowell exclaimed. “We didn’t qualify as well as I would’ve liked but was able to get it done in the feature. Hats off to Smoky Mountain Speedway for a great track. A very special thank you goes out to all of our sponsors and everyone who helps make this program possible. I’m looking forward to Florence this week.”
McDowell laid down the fourth fastest time in his qualifying group, which positioned him seventh on the starting grid for the A-Main. With polesitter Donald McIntosh setting the pace for the first half of the race, Dale began closing in on the leader in the final 10 circuits.
After the pair took part in a heated battle for the lead with Cory Hedgecock, McDowell took control of the top spot for good on lap 34 and held on for the final six laps to capture his third win of the season. McIntosh, Hedgecock, Ryan King, and Dakotah Knuckles trailed him to the checkers in the 40-lap affair.
