Seventh-place finish in DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals opener at Volusia
Shane McDowell Racing and Dale McDowell embarked on the fifth annual DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals on Friday night at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) after the opener on Thursday fell to wet weather.
Alongside a stacked field of 55 World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series entries, McDowell laid down the third-fastest lap in his group before going flag-to-flag in his heat. Lined up fourth for the A-Main via the redraw, Dale lost three spots in the 35-lap affair to finish seventh.
Back at the half-mile oval on Saturday, Dale outran pole-starting Bobby Pierce in his heat race to pick up the eight-lap victory. Starting the $15,000-to-win DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals finale in third, McDowell was an early retiree from the 40-lapper on the eighth circuit.
