McDowell picks up $15,000 King of the Mountain at Smoky Mountain during birthday weekend
Earns $15,000 Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series Payday
MOORESBURG, Tenn. (05/19/25) – Dale McDowell added another accolade to his distinguished career on Saturday, claiming the $15,000 King of the Mountain at Smoky Mountain Speedway aboard his Shane McDowell Racing / Reece Monument Company No. 17m Team Zero Race Cars / Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model.
McDowell’s hard-fought victory over fellow veteran Jimmy Owens—his third career triumph with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series—was fittingly achieved during the weekend of his 59th birthday.
“I had a little bit different right-front tire on, so I was definitely better on long runs and not as good on the short runs,” McDowell said. “I just had to play defense there at the end, but the longer runs I could kind of get away, or (his brother) Shane (McDowell) would tell me I’d get away.”
McDowell commenced his doubleheader weekend on Friday with an in-state appearance at Sugar Creek Raceway.
With the Georgia oval drawing 33 Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series entries, McDowell set the tone early by claiming fast time honors in qualifying and securing a heat race victory. Lining up on the pole for the feature via the redraw, McDowell led the first 27 circuits before relinquishing the top spot to Jimmy Owens, ultimately settling for a runner-up finish.
In search of redemption in Saturday’s King of the Mountain Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway, Dale backed up a heat race win with a resilient performance in the main event. After leading the opening 21 laps, he reclaimed the top spot from Jimmy Owens on lap 28 and pulled away to secure the $15,000 triumph.
The victory marked his second overall of the season and the third of his career with the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series.

McDowell is set to continue his 2025 campaign over Memorial Day weekend with a trio of Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals events spanning two states. The three-day slate opens Friday at Sugar Creek Raceway, followed by a Saturday stop at North Georgia Speedway, and concludes Sunday with a $10,053-to-win finale at Tennessee’s Duck River Raceway Park.
